For the last couple days my steering has been making a squeaking noise... but not at the pump or the belt, sounded like it was coming from the steering wheel. Steering hasn't felt great lately, but I thought it was the wind (60mph+ lately).
Today I start it, and let it warm up as I load the generator in the back of the truck, and I hear a rattle type noise. Pop the hood, and it sounds like there is a bearing going in the PS pump...
Does this happen? I'm almost afraid to drive it, in fear of throwing the belt...
I'm not the type of guy to throw parts at it either, even though the pump is only $70, and a new serp belt is $30.

When would it squeak? All the time? Only when turning left? Only at full lock, etc. etc. ?
What does "Steering hasn't felt great lately" mean?

I take it the rattling is only at idle? Has the squeak now gone away? Is the fluid full and clean?
there were "issues" with the "early" SuperDuty F250/F350 truck power steering units. So based on your 99 MY truck I would suggest it is probably time for some TLC to the pump, shaft, and PS unit just based on age alone. IIRC the primary problem was centering the PS unit internals correctly...but there were plenty of reports that the PS pumps failed early too. There were also issues with the correct torque on the bottom bolts, and issues with the lower ball joints. There is a TSB for proper diagnosis for "hard turning" and for "wander" most of the time traced back to poor lower ball joints but during the tests...many owners got new PS units and sometimes new PS Pumps and occasionally new PS hoses. In 01 or 02 there were some fairly significant changes in the parts and suppliers IIRC (If I Recall Correctly)... I had several PSD owner "friends" with these problems...most were caught in the warranty period... of course the PSD is much heavier in front so the problems showed up faster then with the 5.4 or 6.8 gas motors
squeak - anytime the wheel was being turned, but never when the wheel wasn't turning.
Hasn't felt great - was wandering around the road... it felt like, but like I said, we had almost 70mph winds the last couple days when this problem started.
Fred - Thanks for the news... I had no problems today at all... hard to diagnose when the problem comes and goes
