New Guy with New Excursion 2000 4x4

After 3 Suburbans that all let me down around 100K or so I took the plunge and bought a 2000 Excursion 4x4 last night.

I have to say that this is my first Ford and it is very nice. I have 4 little ones to haul aroiund + my boat and trailers and this truck will do it safely and easily. It has the V10 engine. It is in pretty good shape and I'm learning about it through the owners manual and this forum.

I have two questions maybe somebody can help me with.
1-Looking at the owners manual, the oil changes were documented up to 56K and synthetic was used. I bought the X with 81K from a dealer and have no idea if synthetic was used from 56K to present or whether regular oil was. Does this matter? Can my mechanic tell if he drains it whether it's a synthetic or a regular oil. If someone did put regular oil back in it would this hurt it???

2- I have "wind noise" on both driver and passenger doors. Something is rattling behind the seatbelt connection. I think it's related to wind since it changes in intensity the higher the speed goes. Any ideas??

I really like this vehicle. It is so tight even with 80K on it. My suburban seems like a toy compared to this thing.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Joe

I had a Suburban prior to my 02 Excursion purchase. My Suburban was always breaking down, especially on vacations..... It became a joke, what Dealership will we visit this vacation. Our Excursion now has 122,000 miles on it and has NEVER let us down. We have been in two major accidents with it and no one in our rig was hurt. It is tighter now than our suburban was coming off the lot. I do get wind noise from the front doors on the freeway when strong side winds are around, but have learned to live with it as the doors are huge.

Best rig I have ever owned! I just got 18mpg over Thanksgiving going to Washington State and back with the family, dogs and a truck full of stuff. Not bad for a large SUV!
Enjoy yours.
Pat

Joe - Changing to dinosaur oil will not harm your engine. It's your decision to go dino or synthetic. Since I change my oil every 3K miles, I use dino ... 10W-30 (not the 5W-20 "sewing machine" oil).

There was a thread I read that addressed slipping lengths of small diameter tubing through the door's weatherstripping. The idea was to add a little volume and stiffness to the OEM weatherstrip ... make it more stout. You'll have to search for that thread, unless another poster can find it, and post the link here.

1) You can use either dino or synthetic oil,, but I really stay awaying from the sewing machine oil also,, I use nothing less than 10w30. My last 4 vehicles used synthetic and all went over 180,000 miles when sold never had an engine problem. All gas burners.

2) Ok,, I have wind noise also. I just turn the stereo up a bit.

Are we having fun.. Jim

The rattle noise is most likely from an ill fitting weatherstrip on the door post that is supposed to contact the rear edge of the front doors when the doors are closed. I placed a 1/4 inch piece of foam weatherstrip on the rear edge of the front doors so that the foam contacts the rubber strip on the door post when the doors are closed. I've had no rattle noise since.

I joined the V10 club this weekend too. Found a super nice Limited 2wdrive after looking at a few dogs that were for sale.
I am trying to fond out from the former owner
if the plugs have been changed, as it recently turned 100k.
Did get a Ford dealer to give me the servie history, and it looks like most of the recalls and other common probs have been fixed.
I am looking forward to towing my 31' Airstream with this puppy.
Hope to get the Helwig sway bar deal in the near future.

The conventional wisdom on this site is to change the plugs, but have you noticed that a significant number of the plug problems occurred after a plug change? How do the plugs look after 100,000 miles? Sometimes if it ain't broke... It doesn't look as if the plugs were meant to be changed frequently.
