i have one speak up please!one for sell or like to sell! are they worth it? do you like what is does? have a 01 x psd 4x4 that pulls 11k toybox it needs gear help trying to decide gear vendor of go to 4:30 x needs to be soccer mom express to!needs info asap
You might think about a shift kit for the tranny, that will increase the line pressure and help with your shifting. If that isn't enough then going to 4.10s would probably be my choice as it would be much easier on the pocket book than a gear vendor unit.
Not to thread jack but I just purchased an '03 F550 CC 7.3L with one of these installed and have no idea when/why/how to use it. Ive emailed GV twice with no reply. Can anyone give me the low down on this unit?
I am really surprised they haven't contacted you, as I had a similkar situation, and had no problems getting a response. Have you tried calling on the phone? Maybe that will work out better. I can imagine they get 1000's of emails, and have to sort through what is business and what is garbage...
I have one on the 92, but at the moment, it isn't active. Mostly it gets used simply as a second overdrive, because with the Cummins and the 4.10's, I don't really need to split gears, just need to get the rpm's down on the highway.
You know those long flat stretches where you wished you had an extra gear to conserve fuel?
THAT'S WHAT IT DOES!
Or, if you are happy with your road and highway gears, but there is one nasty hill on the way to deer camp that is really a pain in the backside to get up - you can get an UNDERDRIVE. (ENOUGH TO PULL A HOUSE OFF IT'S FOUNDATION)
Essentially, what it gives is a gear between the gears you now have, as well as an overdrive gear. How mine works is if you want to split the gears, you first have to get going over 25 mph, that is the minimum it will safely work at, as it has it's own oil pump that is driven off the speed of the driveshaft. So basically, you generally would be in second, then you can kick the GV unit, so you have basically second over, or 3rd under, however you want to call it. The when you go for 3rd, you let off, and you have regular 3rd gear, then kick it back on, and 3rd over, 4th under, whatever. Off for 4th, back on for overdrive. If you have 5th, you would kick it back off before shifting, then back on once up to speed.
The other function is basic automatic, which is only overdrive. Once you get to 45, the GV unit kicks into overdrive. The way I tend to run it is go through the basic 3 (automatic trans) let the GV unit engage, then engage the trans overdrive. I rarely if ever need to split the gears.
The advantage of a GV unit would be better seen in a cummins or Power stroke if the truck had 3.55 gears rather than the 4.10's. Then you would understand the need of a gear between the transmissions regular gears, plus on the highway empty, the truck could run about 1600-1700 rpms and be happy.

See those commericals for Geico.
We all forget a period now and then.
IF you have one (a gear vendors overdrive unit) for sale or would like to sell yours, please make this awareness known!
If you have one on your truck (or other SUV) now, how do you like it's performance especially in relation to the amount of federal reserve notes that it takes to purchase one? Please offer your valued experiential comments!
I have a 2001 4 wheel driven Expedition with the famously powerful but rpm challanged Power stroke diesel intalled for it's power source. I pull a trailer that weighs 11,000 lbs when it is filled with my big boy toys and I sense that it is not performing up to its' best capabilities. I am considering changing my rear end ratio gearing to 4.30 OR to install the famed Gear Vendors Unit. Other factors for my consideration is that my wife doesnt' need extra distractions of other gears when shuttling the children to and from soccer and grocery getting events.
But since I have a big boy event coming up soon, I would love to read the offers of your suggestions in the nearest future possible. (end translation)
What is interesting to me, is that the PSD even needs regeared when towing only 11,000. Perhaps he should be looking for a v10 expedition.... sorry, couldnt' resist the v10 plug.
