does anyone know where i could find a wiring diagram on converting from a generator and regulator to an alternator on my 56. or any information about making the switch. thanks for any help
-Josh
I changed my 54 f100 to an alt. years ago, get a voltage regulator from a 68 or 69 Dodge it has 1 wire going in and 1 wire coming out, put your ignition wire on 1 side of the regulator and hook the other side to the field on your alt. and besure to have your thick red wire going to the batt. on the alt. that's it mine worked perfect for years.
I changed my 60 f100 w/292 to an alternator recently using Ford
alternator and regulator. Just get the alternator, regulator,
and wiring harness all from any Ford vehicle from 65 up and it
will work. I used a Ford electronic regulator with a 60 amp alternator
and the generator light is functional. If you use an older regulator
you may have to lay a resistor across the wires that go to the gen
light (15 ohm, 10w). These can be bought at Radio Shack or a tv repair shop and are inexpensive. (If you have an ammeter, this is not necessary.) This would be done under the dash on the wires coming out of the gen light socket. This is a very simple installation and you can keep it all Ford. Ford alternators are plentiful in wrecking yards. On a y-block will need to fabricate mount for the alternator.
The wire coming from your dash indicator will probably be yellow or yellow with a black stripe and should be hooked to the "I" terminal
on the regulator. This wire originally went to the armature terminal
on your generator voltage regulator.

I converted the generator on my 352 to a regular Ford alternator and bought a one-wire regulator (bolts on the back of the alternator) from one of the classic shops.
I found a C%$#y alternator at Napa that is a true one wire and is supposed to be used in industrial applications. I put one in my 60 and liked it so much I bought another one for my 38. Hook a wire from the alternaor to the battery and BAM you're done!!.
