Angry 01 ranger mileage

i have an 01 ranger 2.3 5spd xl reg cabhort bed with a cap &3.73 2wd, it recently got new spark plugs, wires,kn cleaned and was getting 26mpg with the 4 bald 225/75/15s, i recently bought 4 new 235/75/15 wild country radial rvts (comparable to a bfg mud terrain tread pattern) and installed them on there and have went from 26 mpg down to 15-21mpg the last three tanks after the new tires is this normal with a larger more aggressive tire? im just wondering if something else could be wrong to cause the severe mileage drop, my driving is 80% highway and 20% city with a 95 mile round trip to work per day, any info appreciated thanks.

Your new tires are 1/2" diameter larger and thus will give you a false low reading on your odometer thus deflating your mpg.

According to Tirerack.com, the OE tire for your truck is 205/75-14 which has a dia of 26". If this is correct, your 235s are 3" dia oversized.

Suggest you check your odometer reading to a known measured mile. Does your speedometer appear to read low?

My truck came with 225 70 15 tires, and i currently run 235 75 15 tires. My speedo is off 3 MPH at 60 MPH. So in order to calculate my gas milege i use this equasion. I'll put out the equasion as if i drive 250 miles, and my speedo is off 3 mph at 60 mph.

250 / 60 = 4.17 X 3 = 12.51 + 250 = 262.51 actual miles driven.

If you had done the math for 250 miles driven, and put in 12.5 gallons of gas, you would have got 20 MPG, but after correcting you actually got 21 MPG.

For starters....if your truck came equiped with 15" tires they were a 215/75/15 which on a street radial should have been around 26" diameter and about 24 or 25 lbs of rotating mass not including the wheel. Now with a new 235/75/15 you are looking at about 29 inch diameter and 34 or 35 lbs of rotating mass without the wheel. So 3 things that you have done here is #1 added height to your truck and affected gear ratio, #2, you have added about 40 lbs of rotating mass/resistance, #3 added wind resistance because the aggressive tread catches more wind and raising the height of the truck allows more air underneith thereby causing more aero drag. This all added in with the inacurate spedo/odo is what is messing up your mileage. Bigger tires/more aggressive tread will definately do a number on your mileage.

i've noticed since i've upsized my tires that i have suffered some fuel economy on my 2001 2.5L i went from about 29 MPG down to about 23 MPG on 245/75/16's (30.5)

hey level II: the tire size that came stock on 2001 2WD rangers were 225/70/15

I noticed no gas milege drop on my truck at all. I have 2 inch spacers in the front and put on the bigger tires, and alloy rims, and my gas milege is the same. I get about 23 on the highway A/C on or off, and around 19 city. It might make a difference that my truck is a stick.
My friend put 265 75 16's on his '03 tremor, 3.0 auto, we cranked the torsion bars up to level the truck and these tires barely fit, and his gas milege went to crap. He gets about 15 mpg around town and around 18 on the highway.

How much did that cost you, cause it kinda bugs me having the milege being off, but dont want to spend a lot of money having it fixed.

I upped mine (2000 B3000) from 225/70R15 to 235/75R15...

Mileage didn't get affected much.

I also reprogrammed my speedo myself, as I was working for a Ford dealership at the time.

Tires aren't aggressive though.. just some Uniroyals highway terrain I got cheap.. they look good, with the white letters and all though!

Not a fan of Uniroyals... but they do drive smooth.

I noticed in the original post that in addition to the tire size change, the K & N Filter was cleaned. Is it possible that it was over-oiled and has fouled the MAF sensor? Just a thought.

By the way, I went from 31's to 33's on my '03 FX4 II and have noticed a 1-2 MPG drop, but the ride is smoother.

I don't have any freinds at the ford dealer anymore, maybe i can hit up one of the techs do do it on his lunch hour for $40 or something.

Dirty south--- you have a good point, you only want to spray enough oil on the filter to barely color it. I always clean my mass air flow sensor everytime i clean the filter, i use electrical cleaner that i bought at the local auto parts store. It tends to go a little corroded since i live on the coast and theres salt in the air.
