Ok, I was driving to my 3rd shift job last night when I heard a boom. Getting out looking under the car the belt was snapped so i thougt it just snapped... but the pully coming out of the crankshaft appears bent or something. I took a few pictures I was looking to see if any of you have seen this or would know if its gonna mean a new engine. This is a 302 if that matters. I tried to get the best pictures I could but it was tough. Remember that that whole wheel appears bent. I wonder if the crankshaft snapped?
Looks like the outer half of the harmonic balancer has seperated from the inner half. They are bonded together by rubber. The timing cover crankshaft oil seal also appears to be damaged.
I agree with F150xlt. That rubber bond tends to deteriorate with heat and age. Generally you begin to feel a vibration that gets worse with higher engine rpms. It shouldn't be that bad to fix as long as the timing cover is not damaged. A new belt, harmonic balancer and seal and you'll be back on the road.
the crankshaft snapped, at least one rod somehow bent, the water pump and harmonic balancer broke, the belt snapped and bent the fan, and the fan clutch had to be replaced too from that...
It got pretty serious but hey, 2 grand to get a rebuilt is still cheaper than a new truck payment...
Thank you all for your thoughts... it was worse than I could have imagined...
I got it back running now though
Now after Xmas I'm getting a bull guard and maybe get that lund visor installed I've had for awhile new in a box for like a year to make me feel a little better about spending all that $$$
It really sucks this happened to you but you are right a new motor in a truck you know tip to top is way better than payments on something you dont know at all.
Yea I really wanted to go to a 351... but too much change overs and the fact that I really don't need the extra power...
It's good to be back running
This is an intelligent man right here! We car/truck guys are always looking for more power, faster this and that, but when it came time to make the call, he chose proven, reliable performance over big numbers and braggin' rights.
That said, I'm gonna get back to figuring out how to get a 450 HP CAT 3126 to bolt up to my NP-435 and fit under my hood, because I like to pull stuff.
