rusty pushrods

Hey folks,

I pulled my pass side valve cover and I noticed I had 2 pushrods that were rusty on the shafts. These are aftermarket adjustable rods. and were like the rest. It was on the #1 exhast and #2 intake. Could this be from sitting. Or do I have a more serious issue?? All seems normal, the valves are not collapsed. I should have slid the rocker over and pulled it out to see if it's blocked?? The engine sat a while before I got it.

any input??

bob

Alot of rust (flaky bits) or just brown surface (tint) ? If the first, I dunno ...would be inclined to pulled the intake and review valley/lifters. Only reason I can think of for that would be water in the oil at some point...and sitting. ??????

FE's don't oil thru the pushrods. They oil thru the rocker stand.

Some random rust on the pushrods is not a big deal. Sounds like it sat for some time, oil dried off, then rusted. Not a problem unless they are about rusted in two pieces LOL!

Any rust will weaken them. It's a question of how much. A little to where you can wipe or polish it away is ok. If there's obvious pitting, I'd replace the affected ones.

are the pushrods solid, or are they still hollow like the usual ones that carry oil?

Well, I feel better now thank you all. They are not heavy rusted just a light uniform coating. Just seemed a little odd looking at them.

thanks

The set that was in my 76 (then a 360 now a 390) were the same way just slighly rusty and it was only from where they stick through the head up to the rocker end the part that was inside the block was not rusted. upon pulling the manifold off of a 65 thunderbird i snagged a whole nother set and they were the same way. i used the set i had to begin with and i have not had any issues with them. but now rusty got me a little nervous....lol..and all of the rods ive seen out of an FE were solid non oilers...not to say that they r not used..
