I own a 2005 Explorer V8 Limited that has had a high frequency vibration problem since the first month I bought it. I've done the whole call FORD help desk thing (useless), Ford engineer's took it for a ride and said "They all do that" but up to this point (5th trip to dealer) no one put a vibration meter on the Expy to diagnose the problem, hmmmmm. Yesterday I took the Expy to another Ford dealership and their tech's ran a vibration diagnosis & test drive and said it was in spec. Ok I said, can I see the readings? The service manager said they didn't write them down. I then ask for their spec limits. No reply was given.
This has gotten real fishy. Is anyone aware of any transmission/Transfercase related problems with these vehicles that Ford is not being straight about? I spoke to a field engineer that sell vibration detection equipment and he said that one of the big american manufacturers changed something in their AWD units for 2006 to cut down on the vibration coming up into the cabin of the vehicle and I was wondering if that might be Ford. Anyway, I just want to get this fixed so that I can enjoy it.
I have a V8 2004 Explorer that did the exact same thing from the first month I bought it. I brought it to the dealer numerous times in that first year and it was extremely frustrating. FINALLY, they got a Ford engineer to drive the vehicle at highway speeds (that is when the vibration was at its worst) and they determined that it was the drive shaft and they replaced it. Unfortunately, it still did the same thing - it was a bit better but not they way a new vehicle should run. I took it back and continued to complain. They changed the drive shaft a second time and "knock on wood" i've had no problems in the 2 years since.
The full text of the TSBs isn't available here, just summaries. But that would be enough ammo to take to a dealer who might otherwise just blow you off.
