Got two electrical problems on a 1995 Bronco I just bought.
1. The drivers power window switch doesn't always make the window go up, it's pretty erratic (works for a while, then doesn't, then does). I'm thinking the contacts are getting corroded, is this the usual cause? Can the switches be taken apart and cleaned or is it pretty much time for a new switch?
2. The rear defroster doesn't kick on. Fuse looks okay. I realize it could be quite a few different things but is there a likely culprit here?
As far as the rear defrost goes, I'd check the wire bundle that enters the lower left corner of the tailgate - it gets flexed every time the tailgate is opened and closed and is almost doubled over when the gate's shut. I've got a broken wire there and assume that's why the rear defrost doesn't work, but I seldom need it and haven't even bothered to try fixing it.
2. I also don't need it but tested power to it as follows. Open the tailgate. Remove the access panel. Snap the door latch together on the driver's side. Use key and raise glass only enough to see wire connection tabs---farther out and you need to support glass or it may break and is very expensive. Turn deforster on. Put a meter or test light on the connection tabs to test for 12v. (Remember to lower glass and open latch before closing tailgate). The tab connection from wire to grid needed cleaning up on mine.
1. Have you tried an aerosol can of dry lube to the window channels?
Assuming one has power to the terminals on the defroster grid it would be fairly safe to further assume the grid is at fault. Does anyone know the following?
1) What is the typical resistance of the grid or
2) How much current does the grid pull? (Yes I know about Ohms Law!)
3) My rear windows have an aftermarket tint film - would you expect this to affect the operation of the grid?
Check the trace right where the wire connects to the grid. The tension of the wire pulling on it tends to create a crack rigth next to the wire connector, which has happened on the last 3 that I checked.
1. I had that problem on mine. I took the switch apart and clean it and it still didn't work. I had to get a new one from ford. Now it works like a charm.
