I have read it is not a good idea. The amount of electrical power needed to pull the amount of air the stock fan suck, was much higher than the alt can keep up with. Diesels seem to me to produce alot of heat, more than gas anyway. It would take a pair of amazing fans to keep it cool.
With that in mind, you could get away with a kit like troyers or flexalite 270 (i think that is the number).
