Lee, I have serious doubts that you will find anything that will run on six volts besides the stock setup. There just isn't any demand for it. If you don't mind going up to 12 volts, though, you've got some choices. The Pertronix kit works, but finding a Pertronix module in the middle of nowhere on a Sunday morning may be a bear if it happens to quit on you. I converted mine to a Chrysler 318 distributor and it runs like a champ. Parts are really easy to find, too. But again, 12 volts. Good luck!

You most likely will not find an aftermarket ignition system for 6 volts systems. If you have the earlier style of distributor that is mounted low on the engine in front you can get either a Mallory dual point or a no point system. But those are only in 12 volts. I believe they also don't use a separate box, so no boxes to clutter up an either wise stock engine bay. If you have the more modern top mounted distrib that looks like the ones from the 50-70's then you can either replace it with a Mallory unit, or check Pertronix for a kit to add an Ignitor to the stock distributor. As far as the Ignitor mods crapping out, my bro runs one in his Falcon, and hasn't had any probs. If it really concerns you then just carry your stock points and condensor in the glove box. A Pertronix is a drop in system, you can put the points back in very easily.

Lee, ignore the naysayers here, they are among the clueless.

There are several ignition systems that will run on 6V, negative and positive ground.
Back in the 60-70 era there was a big market in CD (capacitive Discharge) ignitions since points were burning up at an ever faster rate as the Big 3 tried to get more HP on the market. At that time 6V was still a regular thing on the older vehicles.

These days go to E Bay and search for a CD system. They are available and cheap; Ive bought 5 in the past 2 months; all in the under $20 range.

Brands such as Heathkit, Mark10 and others have a jumper thet selects positive or negative ground. Others are strictly negative ground and offer 6/12V. Some are 12V negative only.

Switching over a Positive to Negative is really simple; even staying at 6V. Doesnt cost any money either.

If you are feeling rich the Pertronics is available for 59A or 8BA distributors thru Remund Ignitions.

I can offer a few other modern options if you wish.

Hmm. Clueless, huh? I see. Well, 286, please excuse the ignorance and stupidity of myself and my softheaded brothers. I'm not quite sure what might have come over us. Where could we have possibly gotten the audacity to attempt to advise our peers with the same degree of magnificent accuracy as yourself? I am so ashamed. Obviously this message board is a festering sore on the surface of our fine hobby. It is clearly a detriment to everyone to have so many experiences and opinions publicly posted with the possibility of overlooking one solution to a problem. In the future, I will try very hard to remember the humiliation I have brought upon myself and remain silent for fear of offending those whose advice is obviously far more valuable than my own. In the meantime, please consider the stress-relieving qualities of POUNDING GREASE IN YOUR TAILPIPE when dealing with us low-life morons in the future. Have a nice day.

Leebak, Ive found them on EBay Motors under Parts and Accessories.
Also under Consumer Electronics in the general category. Even got one in the Industrial section. Use various search words, CD, CD Ignition, Capacitive Discharge, etc.

Ive bought several so I can possibly reverse engineer them and come up with a product using components available today. My thinking is in kit form since Im not into doing a lot of metal work that just skyrockets the cost in small production. A PC board, parts, a box and a heat sink.

Just my opinion but spending $200-400 for a little ignition module is not cost effective for this old New England Yankee!

Larry, Mickey Remund buys the modules from Petronix and modifies them to fit. No WEB page but call 619-460-3620.

You can go to a Petronix web page and get a lot of info on how they work.

For an 8BA you can buy an HEI built right inside the original cap from Daves HEI Ignitions: http://www.davessmallbodyheis.com/
A whole lot cheaper and better IMO.

Ask and you will receive so that thou may remove the clueless label from thy buttocks.

I can't seem to get the search posts function to work on this site.
Is there a writeup on converting:
1) from pos grnd to neg grnd (remaining 6V)
2) completely changing over to a 12V neg ground system
3) converting points in a Y block distributor to electronic ignition

Any help would be much appreciated; the application is a 256 Y block in a 54 C700 COE.
