electric fuel pump

I just installed an electric fuel pump. God! What a pain! Took a bath in diesel...anyway, I hooked it up to the IP cutoff wire[near the throttle]. Things were working so so [had a leak around my fuel filter, when the pump shut off...now no voltage to the fuel cut off. How is that fused? Where can I repair it? It's gonna get cold, tonight about mid night, so, please help me find this thing before too late.90 f250.

At this point it's not really an emergency, just important. I've got 2 days off...time to figure something out. I guess I'll have to trace the wiring back to a fusible link, fix it and find another place to get my voltage for the fuel pump. I sounded so desparate because a cold front is coming in and I'm working in the yard, since I have no garage. I can just freeze a little, I guess. If I heard some good info, I'd go out in the dark and not so cold, yet, and try to fix it. The Chiltons manual I have only has the glow plug circuit and it's incorrect...the wire colors it calls out are wrong.

i have a `90, f450. i hooked my electric pump up to the same power source as the tank selector switch (if you have dual tanks). on the back side on the selector switch, there is a red wire in the center, hook your pump up there.

where did you put your pump ?

Thanks J.hanna. I'll try that after I figure out the fusible link problem.

It has always showed for Supporters.

Have you edited your signature in the User CP?

All my fuseable links are located on the passenger side inner fender behind the battery.

Yours should be there on a 90 model also.

I missed your question, J.hanna, about where I put my pump. I mounted it inside the c-channel frame just foward of the fuel selector switch with an inline filter in series, before the pump.

i have a question about a electric fuel pump. i was thinking about installing a pump in the same location as the one you have lartross, but didn,t know if the electric pump would bypass fuel through the lift pump or bust the diaphram in it. it would be greatly appreciated for your opinion on this or am i looking to far into it?

It will pas through it if it still pumps, but the risk is that it will rupture, and let diesel into the crankcase. Best setup is to bypass the mechanical pump all together. You can get a BB Chev block off plate to cover the hole where the pump is.

don't you guys think that if the mech pump diaphram ruptures that the engine will die due to lack of fuel pressure. sure you get "some" fuel in the crankcase, but with the engine not starting...............

only takes a pinhole to leak, not like it is a total dump when they leak. That can happen even without the electric pump. When you consider that depending on the pump, they can put 97 GPH through, it can have a bit of a leak and still run. Might be more indicative when it drains the filter while sitting.

i bypassed my mechanical lift pump...I connected the pump to the center red wire on the tank switch...ran ok for awhile, then stopped. I'll try to find out where I lose my voltage tommorrow. Makes me think it wasn't a fusible link, since I couldn't find a fusible link with the same color code as the fuel cut off sw. and I now have voltage on the cut off sw. Maybe there's some sort of built in overload in the pump that's tripping? It's a procomp...I forget which, but the pressure was in range...it was rated for about 97 gph...I figured since it was regulated for 5-7 psi, it'd work ok even though the system didn't need that much product and it would just internally bypass the extra...doesn't that seem reasonable?
