Been looking at used SD's 05 or 06, my question is-Did the 05's have a midyear update?? Seems like I remember reading about bigger head bolts? I cant find anything and the search function aint working so I cant find anything. When was the update, how do I tell if the truck has the updates? can I go purely by the build date?
Thanks in advance.
I just read as much. From what I understand the engine had alot of updates midyear so the later 05's and 06's may be a better bet as far as dependability
Thanks for the link blackhat620-
BUT I think I might be more confused now then I was
If I read that right there is a 05 midyear up date on the motor and the pickup build date really means nothing and I need to know the motor build date-
But when is that date???
it looks like a turbo upgrade on 11/4/04???
BUT it looks like the new head design with the bigger dowl pins is not till 06my or 1/11/06??
That turbo upgrade wouldn't surprise me, Mine was built in 10/04 and the turbo had to be replace within a year the whole P. side of injectors also failed.
Engines in general would be about a month earlier, here is a quote from that thread about where to find the build date for the engine:
"Drivers side valve cover located on the FICM you will see a sticker with the date of your engine assembly."

Yes engine build date is the date you need. Engine build date is located on the FICM it is a yellow tag, FICM located on the Drivers side valve cover close to the firewall.
I don't remember the exact date of the turbo charge upgrade.
Yes the head changes that occurred due to the commonization of the engine did not occur until engines built January 11, 2006 or after.
Yep that helps a BUNCH- I thought I was reading it all right BUT had to check-
SOOOOO the next ? is do the updated heads on the 1/11/06 and later engines make that BIG of a deal?? Looking at both a 05 and a 06-right now price difference looks like about 5 grand.
From what I've seen on the threads here seems that the 05 and up 6.0's are a very good motor- and they got the bugs worked out pretty good- I think the turbo upgrade looks like something worth checking into before I commit to a 05' though-
