how do you tell if a ZF is for the BB or the Diesel. I am looking a buying one because mine is about gone and i was wondering how to tell between the two bolt patterns. The one that i am looking at is an S5-42 is this the same tranny as the one that is currently in my truck??
Check the id tag where it says ratio: 4.14-0.77 will be diesel, 5.72-0.76 will most likely (but not always) be gas. You can also post the Ford and/or ZF part number off the id tag and we can tell you for sure what it is.
first off thanks for all the quick replys. here is what i found out. the tranny i am looking at was built in 1992 part number F2TA-7003-SA. Ratio 4.14-0.77 and i looked it up on the chart that you linked and it came from a 4X4 6.9L or 7.3L. so my question is would this work in my 1995 truck or would i be better off just getting mine rebuilt. I believe the problem with mine is bad input shaft bearing and the 2nd gear synchro is shot. i believe these are the major problems with it. Other than that it is just really noisy. i know they make noise just because of the size and heavy duty build. but mine make excessive noise.
sorry for the long post.
There's a guy on here who rebuilt his ZF and may be able to offer you more insight on what to do. Send a private message to "frederic" I'm sure he can offer you some good advice.
