New to site so bear with me. I have a beautiful bodied 55 Ford 1/2 Ton Pickup truck. Motor very tired and am thinking of finding and swapping out another from local salvage yard to make things easier. Here is my problem: I do not know what engine this is in the truck other than it's a V-8 Ford, OHV, 4 bbl Holley carb, manual choke. Not sure if original or not, leaning toward NOT. Where can I find engine block numbers on Ford to see just what I have and what I might replace it with that will mate up to my 55, 3 speed tranny? Also, can I use this bellhousing and clutch set-up on later models with no hassle?? Looking for a bolt on conversion if possible. THANKS in advance for any help.
Look forward to your replies.
First of all you need to figure out what you have. Is it a Y-block? If it has two studs holding the valve covers on, distributor in the rear ( it angles toward the passenger side ), and exhaust manifolds OVER the spark plugs, it's a Y-block. If so only another Y-block will go in it's place easily. The bellhousing won't fit anything else.
If it is indeed a Y-Block, it could be a 272-292-312 engine. I don't think anyone would put a later intake and carb( 4bbl. ) on a 239 Y-Block, but who knows? As I remember, the 55's had a 272 in them with a 2 bbl. You can use any one of the 3 listed above as a replacement. Look down near the oil pan on the block for casting #'s to help ID it. Post them here and someone will help you out.
