I believe this was covered some weeks ago but I cant find it now.
I have 2 V8 flathead 4spds. One came out of a 48 F5 and the other I dont know but it was attached to a 53 Merc engine.
Casting # on the cases is 59T 7006 for both but the PTO's are completely different. How do I determine the years/applications AND if they are syncro or crash boxes without pulling apart??
Any help appreciated.
The standard tranny for F5s had all spur gears, but the optional 4 spd synchro-Silent had helical gears in 2,3 and 4 - spur geared 1 and R.
I don't have complete parts numbers for the 59T tranny case. The owner's manual says the F4 thru F6 e-brake drum was 7.81" X 2.5" while the F7 & 8 e-brake drum was 9.5" X 3"
Only way I'd know for sure which you have is to pop the shifter cover and look at the gears for straight or bevel(helical) gears. My hunch is they would have used the same case for both 4 spds.
I can't find anything in my manuals about pto's - sorry!
My 48-55 Ford Truck Parts books show the 59T 7006 is for 48-52 trucks, F-1 and up. This is a spur gear tranny( crash box ). A case with 4TH marking is a helical gear ( SYNCHRO ) tranny. The part number for a synchro 4 speed case(48-52) is 8MTH 7006-C.The case itself may or maybe marked with this. The crash boxes also are supposed to be marked with 4TA or 4TB for 48-52. Knowing the Ford Parts system as I do, These synchro units may have been superceded with the 53 units which were different. After all these years, nothing is 100%.
I strongly believe the cases were not the same. A syncro tranny has syncro rings between gears, therefore the need for a bigger case. Compare the size of a spur gear tranny with a NP435 or BW T98,18,or 19. Many inches difference in length. I have a 1942 4wd IHC (In Hell Continuously) Marine Corp Ambulance. It has the Warner Gear T9, which is the same tranny Ford used up til 52 (spur gear). The difference, besides the input shaft,is the mounting flange. I know this, as a friend, using a Hollander Interchange Manual, swapped gears from a Ford case T9 into an IHC case T9. My point being that Warner Gear built this same tranny to different specs for many applications, which may explain the PTO opening. If indeed your two trannys are Warner Gear T9s.
