i have a 85 f350 6.9liter. my question is how do you check the timing on this engine, and what tools do you need and what timing degrees should it be at? thanks for any replies.
thanks spectramac, i kind of figured that i would have to bring it to a machanic shop to have timing checked. i wish i was in western WA, but im in southern La.
If you dont have access to ther proper tools, as is the case for many of us IDI'rs, 12 oclock timing marks line up IP with gear housing is static timing mark. Mine is a rebuilt IP and timed up right on the marks, advanced to the passanger side "rattles" too much, right on is perfect. I have a power stroke rattle when the cold advance is on, once the truck warms up and the advance is off the rattle is gone. Trial and error method, better than just ignoring a gutless wonder IMO!
thanks kjlypw mine is the same way . sounds like power stroke when cold and not as much as it gets warm. it used to be worse before i backed it off a few degrees, and it doesnt burn as much fuel now as it did. but would still like to have it checked to see if it is off, and how much.
