Yes, otherwise the edge stops functioning and you could possibly do damage to your PCM.

As far as the manual says, you can remove the Edge without returning to stock. As for your PCM reading correctly at inspection.... I was wondering the same thing. I have to get a sticker this month and I was just going to return it to stock, get it inspected and then reprogram before I left the garage. I don't think you will pass inspection with the Edge program loaded into your trucks PCM. Your original PCM file is stored in the Edge itself.

They tell you in the manual to return to stock whenever anyone is to hook up a diagnostic tool to OBD II port.

And as far as disconnecting it goes...of course it will stop working if you unplug it...I mean you just unplugged it didn't you? But the program will remain on your PCM and will continue to operate just like the EDGE was still there....you just dont get any of the "Eye Candy"

But regardless of everything....just set to stock and disconnect before getting any emissions done.

My trucks is going in for tranny flush so I wanted to set it back to stock settings. Manual seemed unclear on process( I was in a hurry). Well I went to menu and hit restore defaults. Did that bring me back to factory program? If not any help on procedure would be appreciated. Thanks BWEP

You need to look for the selection : return to stock. Reset defaults just erased any set parameters that you had on your programmer, such as shift points, tire size, gear ratio, WOT, ect, ect . If you just selected restore defaults then your stock program is still in the programmer itself and you are still on whatever level you were running. The easiest way to check this is to look at the top right corner of your Edge. It will have a number there. 0 for stock, 1 for lvl 1, 2 for lvl 2, and 3 for lvl 3. Make sure it says 0

I am in the same situation, my truck is due in June for NYS inspection, I reset the Edge back to stock because I don't know if it would pass in level "2" tune.
After resetting the Edge back to stock I checked for any codes and the truck now showed a P1000 code which I think means the computer has to relearn all the parameters and the code will clear by it self when enough drive cycles are done, it took my truck almost 3 weeks to clear that code, I just checked for any code and it is clear so I'll have my truck inspected, once that is done I'll install my Edge in my truck and go back to level 2 tune.
I know you have to turn the key on and then plug the Edge in but I always unplug my Edge with the ignition key in the off position, it works for me.

So I guess the bottom line is if you have to get your truck inspected you better restore the computer to the stock tune 2 to 3 weeks in advance of any state inspection so the P1000 code can clear or the truck will fail inspection, at least here in NY State....
