Which new engine?

After nearly 320,000 miles it looks like I am going to have to replace the engine in my '93 F150 5.0. Almost everybody offers "remanufactured" engines for these things. Are some better than others or are they all pretty much the same?

I've heard good things about Jasper Engines, no personal experience though

are you stuck on the 5.0? what do you use your rig for? if you up for options you might consider a 5.8 swap if towing and work are more your game.

It is just for highway driving to and from work. Occassionally I pull a utility trailer but no heavy hauling.

It sounds like the 5.0 will work for you, but you will still want to evaluate the 5.8.

Rhinoengine.com almost made me commit, but I decided to build my own. Jasper has an imperfect reputation around here. Check with local shops and do your homework. You should be able to get one put in for $1700ish.

If you have a 5.0L now, swapping in a 5.0L longblock is the path of least resistance. Remove old engine, remove tinware and accessories, install tinwear (and gaskets) and accessories on new engine, drop new engine in, put old engine in plastic "core" container, call shipping company.

Another option, depending on the junkyards near you, sometimes you can find a running complete engine for a reasonable price. Around here, one particular junkyard charges $300 for "small" engines, and $400 for "large" engines, and $500 for "really large" engines. These categories are subjective and depends on the mood of the guy in the booth that day. But, the prices aren't so bad and once in a while if you buy other stuff you can negotiate. Two summers ago I got an EFI 460 with 89K with everything but an alternator for $350.

If you want a reman engine, Jasper is fine as is Ford remans, and the Ford Remans (at least over here in NJ) seem to be priced reasonably similar to Jasper. Maybe $100 more, but the warranty is better from what I could tell.

If you want to swap to the 5.8L, obviously a junkyard engine is the way to go as you get all the tinware and bracketry, efi harness, and so forth, that may not plug "right in" from your 5.0L.

When I did mine I had a local engine builder that has a good reputation build mine. He did me a long block for 980.00$. 7yr 70,000 mile warrnty same as the chain stores give. Kragen wanted 1700$ for the same long block with the same warrnty. He builds his own in his own machine shop. No regrets I have 12,000 miles on it now and its a better motor than the truck had in it new.
