I have a 02 XLT,4x4, 3.73 LS differential, starting to hear a noise from the rear end. I want to change the fluid, and question how much of the friction reducer to use, and what brand. Ford or aftermarket. Any help would be appreciated.
I bought a tube at Auto Zone aftermarket. It was 7 oz and said to add the entire tube. Seems to work good. A little extra cant hurt. The LS is know to be noisy and the addative is a real help.

You seem to have good bit of knowledge on 02 rear diffs. Can you tell me how much oil goes in after draining. do you fill it to the top drain hole or do you have to add a certain amount of oil.
i believe the drain is about a 1 inch pipe plug size plug (probably metric?). pull that and you get "about" 2 quarts out. put the plug back in. about half way up the case on the front left side is a 1/2 inch pipe plug, probably 3/8 square drive ratchet fits the hole. fill untill it starts to run out. it is about 2 quarts, i dont remember exact. put plenty of the friction modifier in (7 oz). kind of hard to fill, i put a 3/8 hose on the bottle , stick the hose in the hole, try to turn th bottle upside dwon and squeeze. most goes inside. i have head that Auto Zone has a small hand pump type thing, but have not use that. i am thinking of looking into buying one. use good gear lube. i prefer to go with the 75w 140 synthetic. if it does anything to help keep things quiet, it is worth while.
