The other day I was wheelin in the hills and I put my 99 F250 into low range and when I went to take it out it would disengage. I stopped, put it in neautral, tried backing up, tried turning the truck off, pretty much tried everything, nothing worked. So I just said the hell with it and drove around for about 10 minutes and stopped one last time and put it in neutral and it finally went back to 2 wheel drive. Anybody else have this problem? If so is there any actions I can take to speed up the 4 to 2 wheel transition?
When is the last time you changed the transfercase fluid.Dirty fluid can cause this.
Try using it more often it helps keep the moving parts stay lubed, also the 4x module needs to learn. Also the procedure is
stop on level ground with foot firmly on brake in neutral then turn or push the switch to change.
Also if there is any corrosion in any wiring plugs it can cause this.

Having had and have several 4x, and the military ones worked on and driven, you need to make sure there is NO BIND in ANY of the drivetrain. Level ground wheels straight, it helps to let off the brake, if any shaft, be it drive, axle, in the transmission or transfer case hase torque or stress/binding/load on it, it will be harder to shift, or not at all. In my experiences with the troublesome vehicles, it works best on level ground (where the truck won't roll) in neutral, release the brake, then shift to 2wd and wait if you have ESOF, it will shift easier. Also it does help alot to run the 4wd every so often, ie; you are on a dirt road going for a mile or so, stop and put it in 4wd, drivei it get the fluid moving all over, just go back to 2wd BEFORE the pavement.
Yeah changing my transfercase fluid would be good. I actually need to change it in the differentials too. Some of my buddies, and i'm guilty too, have fan 4 hi on the interstate when the roads are snow covered and icy. I'm sure this can't be good, what do you guys say about that?
If you mean leaving it in 4WD High on ice and snow covered roads - it don't hurt a thing. It's only on hard surfaces, where the tires can't slip a little, that you're taking a chance.
same thing happened on mine but only 4 lo, 4 hi works fine all the time. tried everything, couldnt get it out, so I took it to ford. They kept it for 1 1/2 weeks gave it back and said nothing was wrong , that it shifted right out when they tried. Then why keep it for so long ?????? Havent had a problem since then.2004 F250 xlt fx4
Mine was doing the same thing and finally the shift motor on the trasfer case went out. Got stuck in neutral between 4low and 2hi wouldn't move an inch. Had to take off the motor and manually put it back in 2hi.
I had this on a brand new 04. Turns out there was water in the relay. Had it towed to the dealer and the next morning it disengaged fine. Looks like 12 hours was enough to dry out the relay. Dealer replaced the wires to ensure it didn't happen again. This was ESOF.
