Am I asking too much of 7.3 ...towing

I have an 02 dually CC 7.3 (Hank, my kids named it) and haul a Lance Camper (3,200-unloaded). I want to tow a Jeep Grand Chereoke behind it. Is that within my band width to tow a Grand Cheroke with the Lance. I mean the 7.3 a mean haulin machine.

I used to haul my CJ 7 behind my old 460cc with ease . I will keep the rig under 60 mph.

Your thots

Thanks in advance
Max

Oh sure, that weight will be no problem, as long as towing two "trailers" is legal in your state. Im not sure if all of the lower 48 allow towing a trailer and a car behind that. It IS a trailer and not a slide-in right? If it's a slide in, then you are for sure green to go.

I assume the Lance is an in-bed camper, right? You would have maybe a total of between 6000 and 7000 pounds to haul in addition to the bare truck. Thats more or less the same as pulling the same weight trailer. Such trailers have built-in brakes to stop their share of the load. You should do the same with the Cherokee.

What Warren said. Your single biggest priority is making sure you can stop safely. The engines are more than adequit for the task.

What the other guys said. I have a big Caribou Camper 3300lbs dry. By the time I load it up with water, food, propane, beer and people I know it knocks out at close to 4,000lbs. I tow my '87 jeep wrangler behind it all the time, as well as a 21' Chaparral boat, not both at the same time of course. I've thought about it though. Double towing is legal here and I have actually hooked my little sail boat up behind my jeep and towed them both to Lake Powell. What a blast. The jeep weighs about 3,000 and the Chaparral boat is about the same. Only difference is the boat trailer has its own surge brakes where the jeep is just dead weight. I can definately feel the difference in braking power. Keep the speed reasonable and make sure you leave plenty of room for stopping and you will be fine. I can still get between 10-13 MPG with that set up. By the way, use the resistors in the tail light wiring of the jeep in order to tap in to the light system. Its easy to wire in so you can use the existing wiring and not have to run seperate towing lights. Didn't know if you had done this with your other rig, but it sure makes things a lot easier. Also if you are not running air bags I would highly suggest it. Much smoother ride. Great set up, have a good time!
