I found an add on my local paper that has a 400 and c6 for sale. The guy wants 200 for both and claims both engine and c6 are in good shape. Don't care too much about the tranny but would like to know if there is any way to know if the engine is as good as he claims? Unfortunately the engine is out of the vehicle. I think this is a great price if all is good. He mentioned the truck they were in was totaled and the engine and tranny were pulled from that truck.

With the engine out of the vehicle you probably are in the "buyer beware" situation as far as the engine and tranny's condition. You could take a chance and buy them both or make an offer of $100 and then try to sell the tranny to get some of you money back. A lot depends on how bad you need the engine.
I was looking for a 400 about a year ago and the cheapest I could find in local salvage yards was about $250, but they would guarantee that it would run and have oil pressure. They didn't say how good it would run or how high on the pressure.
with a battery, cables and a solenoid you could do a compression test pretty easy, he might have it all there already. pretty hard to get hurt at $200, especially since you'll know where he lives.
