recently did the 4:56 rears in my 2WD, 97 Ranger 4.0, 5 speed.
Man is she a torquey little SOB now.... anyhow, went to change the diff oil since its been about 700 miles, and there is no drain plug.
Cannot believe how rediculously stupid this design is. I dont have the damn suction equipment to get the crap out, nor do I want to pull the damn cover off and replace the gasket...
Its very difficult for me to get out in the garage and get dirty, so when I finally get an opportunity only to get a surprize like this, needless to say I am ticked.
Not only did I not get the job done, I got all oiley and my floor all messy trying to d!ck with those suction pumps. (they didnt work..)
Meanwhile my little boy was inside the house patiently waiting for his daddy to get done... man what a dumb design.
Yeah...and with all do respect you sure are making a big deal out of something so stupid. You had to pull the cover to install the gears, you had a chance to install a drain.
It's not a big deal...remove 8 bolts, loosen the other two, let it drain out, remove the other two, remove the cover, clean off the old sealing stuff (I use black RTV), re-apply the sealant, replace the cover, torque all bolts, fill it to the hole.
I've done mine three times and I'm not complaining. Seriously, in the time it takes you to post that you could have the thing drained.
Too me, it was a big deal. Peoples living situations are different, family situations are different, schedules etc... and in my particular situation, it is VERY difficult to get OUT in the garage to do something such as this small job.
For example... my 2 year old boy had fallen asleep, so there was my opportunity.. well, half way though this ordeal, he woke up... so I had to wash up, go upstairs, etc..
Then get back out there, get dirty again while my little boy waited for me to finish, etc. (not to mention I have to wake up at 1:45AM every morning to go to work, which means getting to bed real early..)
Another thing, I didnt do the install. Had I, you bet I would have installed a drain or replaced the cover.
Sorry for such a bitchy rant, I was just happy to get the job finally done so I dont have to worry about it anymore, but obviously I was frustrated when I got all dirty and into the job to discover it wasnt going to be a 10 minute thing.

I had the cover off my diff last Friday. Removing the cover took maybe 2 minutes. Putting a bead of RTV on took perhaps a minute, and re-seating the cover another 2 or 3. Getting the damn oil into the thing took me 45 minutes, and is the only part of the job that resulted in oil being spilled on the floor. Having a drain plug would have saved me 4 minutes on a nearly one-hour job (not counting replacing the seals, which is why I was in there in the first place). I don't view that as significant.
How'd you get the fluid in john112deere? The bottles with the small nozzle built in on the end only work to a point, since they get stuck against the gas tank and frame I believe on my truck.
I ended up using some extra 3/8" diameter tube to run the line up outside the truck. I held the line and a buddy poured the fluid carefully in.
That's what I eventually ended up doing, too. Also considered a turkey baster, but we couldn't find it (the old, garage one; I know better than to use the kitchen one).
The easiest way is just to cut a hole in the bed and fill from the top ha ha. At work we have a 5 gal bucket with a pump on it, it works great, I wish I had something like that at home, but on a smaller scale, I don't need 5 gallons of rearend lube.

Take a look at a pump for refilling lower units on outboard motors. They screw right on to a quart bottle. You may want to change the end that connects to the threads on the lower unit, but they are decent little pumps that work well on small containers. Just an idea. They run around $10 or $15 dollars.
Wait, what about that one ford commercial, where they lift the rtuck up by the bolt. Why didn't you try that, would have made the job heck-of-alot easier

Off-topic, I know: but that's one of the coolest commercials they ever did. Was it real? I remember at the bottom where it said "Do not attempt".
