My 93 Ranger XLT failed my state inspection because the emergency brake warning light does not illiuminate when e-brake is engaged. I don't have the diagram for my interior fuse panel. Before I dig into the dash and replace the light bulb, or pay an electrician to diagnose a wiring problem....I would like to see if it could simply be a blown/missing fuse. Can anyone list the fuses for me ( 1 - 18 ). When I bought my truck it didn't come with a user's manual.
If the rest of the dash lights work, the brake light works, and the light doesn't come on when the key is turned to run but the truck isn't started, it's the bulb.
Actually, I failed to mention I did try the pivot point. I took apart the dash yesterday, replaced the bulb, and it works (sort of). The light doesn't come on until I start the truck, while the other dash lights come on when I put it on "run". I think it should pass inspection, as when the truck is started, it warns me the brake is engaged. Thanks for all your help michigan and Rangerpilot.
Unplug the parking brake switch and ground it... if the light comes on you have a bad switch.. if not then it's something else. Sometimes the little metal tip that pushes up against the bracket (to ground the switch) gets a rough surface on it due to spark arcing... you can usually just take some sandpaper or a file and clean it up.
Thank you as well Mazda guy ( I also have a 2000 Miata MX-5)... After my last post, where I thought I had it fixed...I discovered it worked intermittently...it came on and off when I started the truck, like it is supposed to do. Then it would work a few times, not work a few times...I thought the connection was loose. I took the actuator off, cleaned it, tightened the connection with pliers...same thing. I then discovered if I pushed where it connected forward it always worked. I uninstalled the actuator again, and found the prong moved when I applied pressure...Luckily, my local FORD dealer had it in stock, for a mere $10....Now it works ALL the time -- Correctly even.
Thanks for all the help...and RangerPilot....you are awesome!!! I looked up to see if there was anything specioal I need to do when replacing my shocks, and I found you posted on a slightly diff year ranger....well written article!!
