Hey,
I've been using regular Castrol 5w20 for the past few oil changes. Someone said these trucks are supposed to run synthetic. Anybody running regular oil and are there any ill affects to doing so? I put almost 5k a month on my truck so I tend to just change the cheaper stuff more often. Thanks for any reply.
i use only ford oil in my trucks 04 f150 heritige,01 f250 7.3 the motorcraft oil is not that much more$ but at the oil change place thay will rape you, i do all of my own oil changes
I would stick to or put in better than what Ford recommends. Why cheap out to save a couple of bucks, when the consequences can POSSIBLY result in thousands of dollars in damage?
Motorcraft 5w-20 which is the factory fill is a synth blend. As long as the oil meets the Ford oil spec, then there should be no issue. The price of the MC synth blend at WalMart is pretty cheap so I continue to use it.
TomHONE the reason some manufacturers use synthetic oil is because of the interval change recommendation is much longer than one that uses a non synthetic. Ex: BMW actually monitors your driving and posts a change oil when a certain driving threshold has been met as per the tables in the ECM. On average the mileage is around 15,000 miles. Hence the reason for a synthetic fill. Oils today either fosil , syth blend or synthetic are so much better today than in the past that using a fossil oil that meets the factory specs(M2C153-H), should not have any determental effects as long as the interval of change is adhered to.
Regular (Dino) oil, no matter what weight does not provide the lubrication that semi-synthetics and synthetics provide considerably better lubrication. The friction in the engine will affect your gas mileage and not much more. If you change your oil every 3-5k and drive in a conservative manner you can expect 200k on the engine without major problems with any oil you use. The synthetics say you can go further between oil changes and they maybe correct. If you are really concerned you can have your used oil analyzed and compare the results against new. Do several mileage variants with non-synthetic, semi-synthetic, and synthetic.
