4R70W MLPS Testing

Does anyone have/know a way to test the MLPS?

Problem: Will not shift out of 2nd gear.

1996 F150, 4R70W, 5.0L ~129K/mi.

I prefer to test mlps rather than just replace w/o knowing if it is bad.
I understand a corroded(s) ground will also affect MLPS, but where the hey are they?

Thanks for any info,
Gumby

It is called a TR (Transmission Range) Sensor on a 4R70W.

If it is bad you should get one of these Diagnostic Trouble Codes:
P0707 -- TR Sensor or Circuit Shorted
P0708 -- TR Sensor or Circuit Open
P1705 -- TR Sensor Not Indicating Park During KOEO

Maybe these digrams will help you.

Thanks Bill,
I had seen the resistance chart (above) but had no idea which pins to check when I had it out. The TR2.gif shows some pin numbers which should help alot. Now I just have to figure out how to tell which gear it's in when I rotate it or just how to rotate it w/o breaking it. Maybe a tapered shaft to snug it over? But the shaft has those grooves in it.

I just found out I have to go out of town for a week, so that will give me time to sort it out. Good thing it's not my daily driver, eh!

It looked to be slightly out of alignment when I took it out but my correction didn't get it to shift past 2nd so I thought I should check the resistance also.

Oh for the longest time it never turned on the CEL the pending code was P1401. When it did come on the codes were P1000, P0123, & P1125. When I put my analog meter on the TPS seemed nice & smooth. Of course, I couldn't find any specs on it but it seemed good to me.

Thanks for your reply,
Gumby

hmmm, I know I tried 6 & 7 plus 2 & 3 both read open. Of course I never tried to rotate it thru the gears either.

Guess I'll have to double check my work when I get back.
