Looking for the ponies

I have a 90 F250 4x4 pickup. I use for a work truck I prefer the 90 over the newer fords we use.I but a new Jasper short block 5.8 in it and a turbo cat it has about 30k on it. I was looking for more ponies and mpg. ( HELP)

It all depends on how much of the ponies you want or how much of the mpg you want. To get one means sacrificing the other. Check your timing advacne. It should be 10 degrees advanced at idle, and remeber to remove the spout connector when timing the motor or the computer will attempt to compensate for the change in timing. After that, consider using an electric instead of the belt driven one. This should free up about 17hp and increase your mpg. After that look into an aftermarket air box. K&N boast about a 10 horse gain with its complete kit from air box to manifold and also more mileage. If you are looking for some more ponies, all my other ideas will sacrifice mileage for performance gains.

Opening up the exhaust can help the engine breath better and therby increase efficiency and mileage. Many people report a puzzling drop in mileage after doing this, but it can usually be attributed to a heavier foot on the gas pedal because it sounds so much better. If you can discipline that right foot it'll get your mileage up.

This is an EFI motor right???

Assuming this is correct, put long tube headers and a full 3" SINGLE exhaust on it. Don't waste money on cold air intakes... your factory intake is a cold air system and most aftermarkets are not and offer nothing except more noise.
Timing should be 10deg minimum. The more you can advance it without pinging the better, so if it runs at 12 or 13 cleanly set it there.

I'd keep it at 10...

There is virtually no gain to adding 2-3 degrees advance, maybe 5hp...and you increase the risk of detonation.

For example, it may not ping now...but later on under different conditions it may ping and you might not know it or hear it...bad situation.
