Auxiliary Backup Lights

This came up on the forum not too long ago. I decided today to mount a set of brighter lights to my truck. I did mount them under the bumper, but they are very compact and dont stick out much past the hitch.

I bought a cheap set of driving lights from walmart. About $15. I have done the same to my open car trailer with good results. I drilled a couple of holes as far back as I could in the bumper and bolted them on. They use a carriage head to keep the bolt from turning in the light mount. I added a washer becasuse the head was affecting the turning of the lamp.

Two problems: Wiring harness patially missing, but I plan to do custom wiring AND I had a left over harness from the previous similar lights. It pays to be a packrat once in a while. The inside of the bumper gets pretty tight back in there. I had to use a slim and long socket to make it all work, but its doable. I could even get my hand in there if I did it just right.

I havent done the wiring yet. I plan to have a relay activate the lights in reverse and to have a manual switch to use as utility ligths. The rocker switch that was included is not bad, but I want something a little better looking. I am going to check physically at west marine and online.

I'll update this post when updates come about.

I tried to take a before and after from the cab, but I couldnt get it to come out. From outside the truck you can hardly notice the stock lights with the aux ones on. From inside it does light up the corners of the truck high up like near a wall or another vehicle.

Sorry about highjacking your thread but I want to ask you about your line of fire light. How is it do you have any probs with the leds burning out or it sitting straight.

Thanks

It is pretty good. A few of the LED's are not the same brightness as the others. If you get up within a few inches its the end sags a bit.

I used SS hardware to mount mine and some poly offsets to clear the bumps and whatnot present just above the bumper. I have heard from some critics, but I like mine. I am seeing more and more in my area. When I first installed it I had only noticed 1 or 2. Most look good. I noticed a few have inconsistent lighting. Its not too bad IMO. I choose not to dwell on it too much.

OK, its coming along. Believe it or not, these lights are still not installed. Must be something to do with the hours I work or the 20 month old that I live with.

Here is what I came up with for the dash. These were my second choice on switches. I wanted a round one with a round bezel, but I could only find one locally. I got the ones you see here from discount auto parts. I bought a blue, red and an amber. The blue is going to be for my lights and the red is going to activate the inverter I plan to someday mount. Both switches can carry 25 amps, but they will only activate relays.

I grounded the switches to a piece of bracket holding in the sat radio. I tied into the cigarette lighter lead for the hot wire for both switches and I can plug in and out the harnesses that you see here. In the event that I will remove the bezel again. I used a lot of wiring from the 2 light kits that I had on hand. I fused the switches with a 2.5 amp glass fuse. I ran a white wire from the kit to the location for the inverter and a grey wire for the backup lights to keep the wiring some what straight. They both run down the passenger side wire channel.

I solder all connections that I make. I did not modify any of the kit connections that were already made. I bought a micro torch to help with the soldering. Neat little thing.
