OK this is my first posy on this Forum. I have a 1988 F250 truck with a six cylinder 300. It has a 5 speed transmision in it.
First of all what is the towing capacity of this Truck? I mean how much can it pull? I am looking to tow a tractor (John Deere 4020) that is 8,500 lbs by its self. Tractor would then be on a tandum axel trailer. Could this truck pull this?
Also,
As of right now the truck has problems running. When you start it up it runs great under 2000 RPM, but when you rev it up above that, it starts to Backfire and really bog down. When I drive it it lacks power because I can barely press the gas pedal and go. If I press it more than that, it will backfire and bog down, sort of like it is missing...Does anyone know where I need to start looking to fix this?
As for the performance part. Have you tuned the truck up? ie. sparkplugs, fuel filter, cap, rotor, air filter? Sounds like maybe it might be out of time or not getting enough fuel. Does your check engine light come on?

Check engine light does not come on. It runs GREAT right around idle, then at about barely opening the throttle (about an 1/8 of the way) it boggs down GREATLY!! and Back fires and misses and loose power. I can barely go about 20 mile an hour.
tfi module is what helps in your timing. I would check for vacuum leaks, especially those skinny lines up by the back of the valve cover. They're prone to cracking. Another option is to have your maf sensor tested.
Thanks so much for the help with this. I will try thoes both, first I will try to check the TFI then I will look for more vacume lines...
thanks, any one else?
Anyone know what this truck is capable of pulling as far as trailer weight?
Is it a light duty 250 (under 8600lb GVWR) or heavy duty 250 (over 8600lb GVWR)? You can tell by looking at the rear axle. If there is a protrusion from the rear axle hub at the center of the rear wheels that has bolts around it, you have a full floating axle, so it is most likely a heavy 250, with a GVWR of over 8600lbs.

OK dummy question, what is GVWR? How does that translate into how much I can actually tow, or pull? Is GVWR the amount that the bed it self can hold?
Thanks for this info, its a great start for me. I will try to look for what you described..
