i know somebody on here can help me out. i found a 73 Grand Torino Sport Cobra. the guy said he doesn't know if the engine is original. what numbers should i be looking for. and where are they on the block. i'm not to familiar with the Torino. but this car is all there and runs and drives. thanks
there is a block casting number near the starter, you may have to drop the starter and do some cleaning. then there is the engine build date code stamped into the block near the timing pointer. some are hard to read even being completely cleaned and on an engine stand because of guys using a scotchbrite pad on a whizzy to clean the gasket surface when doing timing gears. you might be able to read them just fine though?
an original 73 CJ will have a raised cast 4 at the corners of the heads. they are not the famous 4V heads though, they have the large ports but with the smaller valves of the 2V heads. i don't know of any way to tell if that is what you have from the outside though. there may be a head casting date code visible under the valve cover IIRC? stock intake would be a 4bbl 4300/4350 spreadbore style.
what is the engine code in the VIN? 5th digit i think?
i'll have to get the VIN # from the guy. the car is about 50 mi from me so i'll have to wait until wed when i am off of work to go and look at it. i only want to buy it if it has the original motor in it. he only wants $2300 for it. thanks for your help
