Cobra Jet intake on stock 460?

Will a Super Cobra Jet intake manifold # D1AE-9424 fit on my '71 429 that does not have cobra jet heads?

429 cobrajet intake, mustang , torino
Also, does this sound like a good deal? The goal is to put a 4 barrel carb on. Thanks for any advice.

it works, some of the boats did that, although there is a huge port mismatch they made more power than a regular non cj iron intake.

Sorry I didn't list more info about the motor/truck. 1965 F100 with a very stock 1971 429, c6, 4.11 gear. Basically, I want it to have lots and lots of torque.

Thanks, I just got done reading about post about "best manifold for lower end torque" you participated in and have decided I the best thing would be to find an aluminum, dual plane, Edelbrock Performer intake and an Edelbrock 600 cfm carb. Would you agree with that? Also, any other advice on squeezing cheap power out of this engine?

I did exactly what you described, I had a stock 460 put together and had to scrounge for headers and intake (69 F100 swb) I ended up with a single plane Weiand and it was a bit dissapointing but when I found the cast iron factory CJ intake and rented a crane to do the swap,JK they are freaking heavy, with stock heads and massive port mismatch the thing flat out hauled butt! I was told it was a velocity thing but man it was a HUGE difference. I say do it.

Update on this subject:
Went to pull a part today to find an axle shaft and spotted a 4 barrel single plane intake in an LTD. I couldn't argue with $25 when I had been looking at $185 so I bought it. I'll get it on tonight and let ya'll know how it runs. Thanks for the advice!

Wrong manifold for torque, it will hurt low end torque. Single plane manifolds are horsepower, high RPM manifolds. Dual plane manifolds are way better for torque.

True, I pulled it with the motorcraft on it and made an incorrect assumption that it was single plane. When I got it home I learned it was a dual plane, spread bore. Dual plane = good but spread bore = bad. I had an extra Edelbrock but its standard bore.

if it is the factory spread bore intake, then only the motorcraft carb will fit. it has a differnet bolt pattern and throttle bore spacing then the other common spread bore carbs like the Quadrajet and Thermoquad and the Holley spread bore carbs.

look for intakes off the mid 70's Ford trucks as most of the trucks came with the square bore holley's on them.

Thanks! I've decided to abandon this one and continue my search. This information is helpful!

mud truck racing oem parts restriction situation. factory intake required situation! It was a port volume increase and not much on restriction to cylinder other than the casting in head. It did like a little higher rpm compared to factory but ran well. It was heavy and huge like mentioned above.

Just to clarify things.. the Scj and Cj intakes are different. The SCJ intakes are square bore. The CJ intakes are spreadbore. The remark about the standard port intakes with spreadbore flanges being unique may be correct. If we have any mustang gurus they might be able to confirm, but I believe the 429 CJ came with a Quadrajet on it and the SCJ came with a Holley. I ran the SCJ intake on standard port heads, but you MUST use the SCJ intake gaskets. The parts store will not have those setting around. If you do go aluminum intake be sure to retorque it a couple of times after heat cycles. I had mine leak coolant twice.

This is the 429 SCJ intake found on the OMC King Cobra Marine engine. Note the square bore Holley.

According to my parts interchange book, the intake for 69-70 cj or police car is DOOZ9424C and its aluminum. scj is DOOZ9424B /aluminum. This book is for Mustang,Torino, Mercury cougar and my book stops at 1970.

edit: scj intake no. is DOOZ9424B

got mine from a panther marine engine. Square bore intake. notice how the valve covers touch the intake manifold and the bolts at valvecover over ports. also the intake at ports just below valve cover bolts will be drilled through into intake port. Little things to look for when chasin parts. Nice find but those intakes remind me of a FE, heavy!!
