Recently I just discovered that my tailgate is stuck closed, it doesnt feel like its jammed but more like the latch isnt working at all on one side while the other is un-latching. Im wondering if any of you have had a problem like this and what you did to fix it, or if you know of anyways to remove the tailgate while its still closed. My truck is a 91 F-250 with a reg box.
Im not sure if there is another way...but a sure way to fix it would be to look inside the tailgate at the latch and handle assembly. There is an access panel held on by a bunch of torx head bolts (i think they are torx head, the star lookin ones) on the tailgate. Just get in the bed with a the correct size torx bit screwdriver or ratchet and take the panel off. Not sure if this is the best way but it will definately let you see whats goin on and fix it.
It's easy. If you have a bedliner remove the tailgate cover. After that you will see a cover in the middle of the tailgate remove the screws and take cover off. That will expose the latch mechanism and the 2 rods that run the lenght of the tailgate. Then take a pair of pliers and pull on each rod which will pull the plunger in and let the tailgate come down. There are plastic pieces that hold the rod to the latch sometimes the rod just slips out and you can just reattach or they could possibly be broke in which case youll have to get replacments at the ford dealer.
P.S. Don't forget when you are putting it all back together that you give all the moving parts a good shot of silicone spray. Good Luck
