I want to put a 5-speed in my 59'. It has a 223 I6 and 4:56 gears, it sounds like B-17 at full take off power at 45mph. I need the gears, but I want 5. Does anyone know how to make this possible? What is a good heavy duty rock solid 5-speed? If so 4-speed+OD?
Factory59, how about a Clark 260 or 280 series five speed ? They are way stronger than you will need, but so what ? My Clark 285V has 6.99/4.09/2.24/1.47/1.00 gears in it. There was an overdrive version available that I looked for and never found, but Performance Gear in Lumberton, MO can put the OD gears in a std box for you. As another option, how about putting a GearVendors overdrive/splitter between your transmission and transfer case ? DF, on the work 'puter
You have 4.56s. Need 'em? A change to 3.50s would make a lot difference, and would probably be cheaper. You still have low range in the TC, so unless you're a rock crawler, something to consider.
As for 5 speeds, the two late model units used by Ford have integral bell housings, (the Mazda and ZF) and won't bolt to your engine.
A Clark with OD would be what to look for.
Forget the 4 speed OD trans from the late '70s and '80s. (I have one) First gear is too high.
