Mazda to ZF complete!!!

It took 5 hours and not much else. I have a 89 f-250 with a 302 that I am planning on replacing with a 5.8 L out of a donor truck that I have. Myslave cylinder went out so I decided to find a ZF to put in while I had the transmission out. Well I used all the same hardware. The transfercase, master cylinder, new slave cylinder (both transmissions use the same slave), and clutch were the same ones that were in the truck. It is a huge improvement. I went on craigs list and founs a transmission for $350. I was rebuilt 4000miles ago. I had been sitting for 2 years though. Made a little noise at first( sat dry for a long time) but all the noises went away after a few miles. The swap was easy! Any questions feel free to ask. -Jake

nope. The zf I got had an internal slave. If you are secptical( which I was at first) go to any parts houses web site and search the parts for the two transmissions. They are all the same except the clutch. You can use the clutch that is on the 302 or 300/6 the hub is the same, the one that came pn the 351 is an inch larger on diameter thats all. I love the granny gear!!

The 460 had the external, the SB had internal and I think that the diesel was internal?

I think both diesel and big block had external slaves. Four wheel drives are a direct swap, but the two wheel drive versions need a two piece driveshaft (from an F250 or 350) because the ZF has a fixed output yoke.

How does the ZF do behind a 302? I'm planning on the swap over Christmas break, but I have a few more parts to acquire before then, like the shifter mechanism that bolt to the top of the transmission and new clutch system since my 87 has an external slave currently. That was a good deal on that transmission...

aww come on guys. The mazda is great. I drug a 2520 John deer uphill trying to pullstart it with my 302 4wd with a mazda.
Granted i was in 4wl! but dont rag on the mazda cause you didn't abuse it properly.

Kinda neat to drag a big tractor with the wheels locked up.
