What type of column would work with an AOD?? I want to try the junkyard before buying a brand new one. What I am searching for is the type that has the gear shifter on the top so you know what gear you are in. What years of Ford would cover that type of shifter and steering???

I am presently working with a steering column from a 1967 Ford F-100
for my 1955 truck. I have the 302 V8 with a C4 automatic. So far everything seems to be fitting together o.k. I replaced the horn and steering wheel with a new Grant aftermarket wheel kit. Using the stock turn signal and column shifter. No tilt, no hazard blinker button and no ignition switch. I plan to use dash mount ignition switch & push button starter switch. I can add a dash mount switch if I need the hazard lights. Write me with any questions.
Very nice job on the steering column installation. Great work and a helpful web site. Wish there were more people like you willing to share their knowledge.
Found one finally in the ol yard...cost me $100 bucks was complete all the way down to the wiring....now my EZ-wiring harness and kit will work perfect. Using an 83-84 Car column with wipers, signal, hazards, ignition, no tilt and high beams switch. The u-joint from mid-fifty.com came in and links up good. Now my 83 toyota 4x4 ps box has the right stuff....next is the engine and tranny install and I am on the way guys...finally after one year....will post pics of the deep purple beast ASAF!!!!

James, for the price you paid, you should have been able to get a tilt column. The tilt feature gives you more leeway on the positioning of the column. In most rods, you have to mount the column more horizontal than it was mounted in the original car in order to prevent binding in the steering linkage, and when you do that you need to tilt the wheel up some to make the steering angle more comfortable. That's what I've run into in the mounting of columns in street rods. I haven't done one in a truck though. Perhaps your's will be different.
There is something going on here I don't understand. I will PROUDLY admit I am a purist, and I wouldn't think of putting anything from a GM product into any of my Fords. Why are so many people putting GM steering columns in your trucks when you could use Ford van and truck columns. They all offer tilt also, right? Am I missing something? Are the GM columns far superior? I do not want anyone to think I disagree with your choices or that I am in any way complaining. They are your choices and that is fine. I just want to understand why.
How was the connection to the AOD done? I understand that the linkage adjustment is critical or you will ruin the trans. I'm headed down the same path (5.0L w/AOD) but I haven't decided on a column yet. My 89 Crown Vic donor car had a rod linkage which mounted to the frame etc and will be a pain to adapt to the F-100. I've heard that after 89, Ford used a column with cable linkage which would be much easier to work with.
