Wallymart has to pay for those price cuts somehow!
I read the article and can somewhat understand the manager's point, but somehow think he should have been able to think it out. Never did say if the customers were told the toys needed to be in Wallymart bags. Then the issue of the collection bin not being in view of a security camera, and the manager obviously knowing the risk of unpaid for toys being placed in there, DUH!
You get what you pay for, both in merchandise and employees!
The all American way....Walmart on one side of the street and storage sheds to put all the crap Americans buy on the other side of the street. Two peas in a pod...? jim
not to sound like a sad sack, but wal-mart and their way of doing business hurts more than it helps. i can drive 20 minutes in any direction from my residence and find a vacant wal-mart building. its seems to me that they build these enormous buildings and after sucking the life from the smaller retailers move on and leave the eye sore. i just wonder if there is a better way of doing things. most communities are left with buildings that are so large that few if any tennants are able to fill the location. just wondering.
I live in a small town of about 8000 in the Texas Panhandle. There are 5 towns that are in a 50 mile radius from our town that are some larger, 10-12,000 population. In everyone of those towns, you can go down to the original business district and you will see block after block of abandoned businesses because out on the edge of each one of these town is a big ole Wallyworld. Our little town has a busy, clean and prosperous down town area that we can be proud of. I hope we never get a wallyworld. They just suck the life out of a little town and then leave. Their payroll can't compare to several small businesses. This doesn't even consider what happens to our tax base. Our youth organizations (4-H, scouts, school groups) prosper because those many small merchants all donate time and money to their causes. Yes, I know we loose some business to wallyworld, but our merchants do a good job keeping their shelves stocked with good merchandise (not that made-to-price junk at wally) at a fair price. I hope wally never comes here. :-X23
Wal-Mart does suck. They are malicious about how they conduct business in small towns, and there are many stories about towns rejecting Wal-Mart's bids to build in their town. But it doesn't make much of a difference, because the smaller town up the road lets them build there instead, and everyone from the first small town shows up for the free hot dogs and popcorn at the Grand Opening.
Wal-Mart is the greatest example of capitalism eating away at itself as described by Karl Marx...eventually,

I understand the problems with wal-malls, but unfortunately, there is little other choice. Once one of those massive one-stop money grubbers is in town, it is automatic that everything else be boarded up. Also, most of the stuff in there is custom made for them. Ever buy a computer from there, then try to upgrade? They are the proud suppliers of the only HP computers with integrated sound, video, and even memory cards. Unbelievable. On a side note, anybody pick up a copy of MIIB from there? I have tried three times, and have gotten three defective copies. And no, it's not my DVD player.
Just read a somewhat related Wal-Mart story. An employee of a Wal-Mart(pardon me I can't remeber the town I will look it up when I get home and modify this post) used her employee discount to help buy toys for a volunteer fire company toys for tots drive. The Amount spent on toys was $1000, and by using her discount she saved a $108 dollars. Well the Wal-Mart policy is that the discount is for employees and their immediate family only. So you guessed it she was fired. Policy or not I think given the situation maybe a review of their policy would have been appropriate, but being fired for helping the unfortunate. Well after the uprising from the townfolk wal-mart offered to give her job back if she paid the $108 dollars she "stole" from them. Seems as though wal-mart isn't in the christmas spirit this year.

Am I the only one who likes Wal-Mart here? Gosh, lol. Well, I'd rather go to Wal-Mart and spend 5 bucks then go to the Napa parts store down the road and spend 12 for some friggen 12 guage wire. I'd also rather go their and buy a hat for ten bucks, then go to the NASCAR store and pay 25 for the same hat. HP doesn't just sell proprietary crap to Wal-Mart they sell it to everyone. Their computers are junk, as are compaq, Sony (previous owner of both the latter), Packard Bell (gone down the tubes of Backruptsy or buyout, not sure), and the list goes on and on. About the only way to get something you can upgrade is build your own, or buy from a company that uses off the shelf equipment. Besides these days it's just as cheap to buy a new one then to upgrade it. A lot of people use on board sound by the way, you can upgrade it by putting in a pci version and disabling the onboard one, but most companies leave the slot available for other peripherials because sound doesn't make really huge advancements too fastly, and for the most part on a computer most people don't care. In fact on board can be better as it doesn't have to travel through a PCI Bus slowing down the processing rate.......not to say this is the case in HP's case. I lived in a town where they fought to not have a Wal-mart put in, i lived right behind where they wanted to build it lol. It wouldn't be so bad if they build them where their are enough lanes, and smooth traffic flow. My only problem was they were going to tear down an orange grove (although it wasn't in use anymore, I don't see the need for destructing what little natural resources we have left). All big business does things we take personal, but if you were wal-mart and you had the ability to perpetuate your business, you would because you see $$$$$$. It's a give and take situtation and like you said since they fought it, they built 2 miles down the road in the next town, but i feel the next town was better equipped as it was still in the building process, not over a hundred years old like my town. BTW target sells cheaper crap then wal-mart, at least when you go to wal-mart you can find some stuff made in America, and they have a great Fishing department (where i spend most of my time)...........sorry for the long post I can see both sides I guess. But that manager wasn't necessarily wal-marts fault, their are bad employees everywhere...........it's the world we live in.
>For the people who like Wal-Mart > If you entered a Canadian

Dennis i totally agree here.
on the other hand Walmart and superstore have the lowest prices around my area so they get my business. the only automotive products i buy from either store is quakerstate/penzoil/valvoline oils and power steering/brake fluid and windhseild washer fluids. i go to canadain tire even for tires.
Walmart has low prices and on the abdandon building deal, theres gonna be one in wpg on the corner of liela and mcphillips as they are moving ito a bigger building. more ugly eye sores for winnipeg now. huzza
