tachometer not working

tachometer not working
My tachometer stopped working, then started again, then on and off for some time,now it has been off for 6 months, I checked the fuse, it was OK, I unplugged the pigtails connected to the starting coil, and cleaned them, then replugged then in, still tachometer does not work.( I thought one of those wires was the tachometer wire, but I am not sure. What is the little cylinder next to the starting coil? It looks like a capacitor, it reminds me of a little cylinder that is attached to the points of a lawn mower. How can I locate the tachometer wire?What color is it? Can someone help me?
