5 speed tranny noises
5 speed tranny noises
I own a 2001 Ford Ranger 2.3L with a five speed transmission.
It has 45,400 miles on it. Every morning when I start the truck up and get ready to leave the transmission makes noises when I let the clutch out. It only makes noises when I'm in reverse and first gear. Do you have any ideas on what this noise might be? Thanks for taking the time to read and respond to this message.

I'd take a good look at the exhaust system, before getting too worried about the transmission. That would be a much more common source of rattle-type (I'm guessing that's what you're hearing, but it would be nice to know for sure) noise in a truck with only 45k on it.
Welcome to FTE and the Ranger forum!
What kinda noise is it exactly? You can even make your own sound effects if you feel the need. Is it a screech, rattle, what? Can you "feel" the noise?
Check the transmission fluid, since the M5OD (that's what transmission you have, the Mazda 5 speed with Over Drive) has a chronic leak from the shift rail plugs. If it gets low...it can seriously do damage.
However, since you're only reporting first and reverse noises, I second john112deere in thinking it's something else. Since First and Reverse are usually "starting" gears, as in start from a stop, I assume that's when you hear the noise. If you start in second, does it make the noise?
And finally, does the noise go away as the truck warms up?

I just checked the tranny fluid and it's fine. I only hear the noise when I first start the engine and start moving. I have also checked my clutch fluid and it's fine too. The sound is a low squeek. I cannot feel it when I drive.
