Oil pump

I would like a second opinion on swapping out my oil pump. (98 Ranger 3.0) I plan on swapping my oil pan when I install a new clutch. (My old pan is rusted) I was told that it is a bear of a job to change oil pans, unless the transmission is out of the way, then its not bad at all. On the old 300 in-lines, we used to drop the pan and swap out the rod and main bearings and the oil pump as soon as it started to get noisy. Those old engines would then go another 100K. Anyway, I thought that I would check the rod and main bearings and swap out the oil pump as everything will be accessible. I was told by an ex Ford mechanic that I should leave the old pump in place because it is nearly impossible to prime a new pump on that engine. (We used to prime the pumps by spinning them with an electric drill) With 170K on my Ranger, I would like a second opinion before I leave the old pump in place.
