Oil change

My 06 PS2504X4 has 3500 miles on it and the owners manual says the first oil change is due at 7500 miles and every 7500 after that for my driving style, I don't tow or haul anything and was wondering what ya'll thought.
Thanks,
Steve.

if you have 3500 miles on break in, it would be best to go aheadand change it. only if its highway miles at the 7500 interval. anything else i would go with 5000. oh by the way, if you change your own oil, expect to find some metal on the drain plug the first change.

I just finished my first oil change on my 07 PSD and I have to say it was very easy, other than watching the oil rise in the catch pan and wondering if it was going to overflow it or not...

I did this at 1500 miles just to get rid of any metal that it might have made. I found that there was more than just "fuzz" on the drain plug and I'm glad I changed it when I did. I added 13.5 quarts as per many suggestions here, and it seemed to bring the level up to about mid way on the dipstick. Unless I hear lots of other voices telling me different I think I will leave it there.

I intend to change it again at 5000 miles and then stick with 5000 miles as an interval for regular oil changes. Its too easy to do for me not to take the precaution of keeping the oil clean. And yes, I'm a bit **** about my stuff.

Just my .02 cents.

I agree with BTH and would change the oil now and then every 5000 miles from this point forward. Personally, I changed mine at 1000 miles, then again at 5000 miles and then went with a 5000 mile interval after that.

after your 3rd oil change you might want to consider switching to synthetic

Question is, what is your reasoning for recommending that "stevtalk" switch to synthetic oil after his 3rd oil change in his 6.0 PSD?

Do the first oil change as soon and early as you can to get rid of the break-in oil and any "stuff"...

Then change your oil and filter (OEM spec'd filter made by Racor) and change it every 5,000 miles due to viscosity shearing breakdown (happens with all oils and brands in the 6.0L).

Use conventional or synthetic as you please and use synthetic if you need "cold weather" operational benefits.... otherwise use CI4+ or the brand new CJ4 spec'd oil that is now available for diesels... I would go with CJ4 if your using a convential oil as it has been reported in the "trades" to be a big improvement for 15W-40 weight oil!!!

I read in the owners manual for my 2006 6.0 that its preferred to use 10w30 oil when temps are -10 to 30 degrees and 15w40 oil with temps above 30 degrees. When I went to the parts store I did not see 10w30 for diesel just for gasoline engines only. Is this something I have to get at the dealer? I was thinking of switching to 10w30 in winter. Will it help mpg's?

Rotella has a 10W-30 diesel out and someone reported buying it at their NAPA auto parts store??? Just do not use their oil filters for the 6.0L - they are not OEM spec'd!!!!

Buy your oil filter at Walmart for $19.99/ea and check NAPA for the Rotella 10W-30 diesel in the newest diesel rated CJ4 API oil spec. CJ4 is newer than the older CI4+... so make sure if your local NAPA store must order... that it is the new Rotella... or whatever brand they may have that is diesel rated for oil.

I did my first oil change at 2000 miles, and had some of the fuzzy metal dust on the magnetic drain plug. I just hit 7000 miles this weekend, and changed it again. No metal dust at all this time. CJ-4 is now available at the local parts store, so that's what it has now. I'll be changing mine every 5000 miles, even though most of my driving is on the interstate. I'd rather be safe than sorry.
