I have a 1982 f100 with straight six, manual transmisson 4-speed w/granny gear. single barrel carburator. I have an idle problem. I notice that on the passgeners side left front of the carburator i have a wire that missing. It's not the choke, i really not sure what it is called. I checked several mauals and can't find it. Anybody have a clue. I am sure it the problem with my idle.
Is it held on with two screws on the passenger front side of the carb?
Does it have a rubber cover on one end, with the wire coming out of that side, and the other side of it has a sort of plunger that "if engaged" will move the throttle linkage on the front of the carb?
Does your truck have Air Conditioning?
It sounds like you are describing the A/C idle control solenoid. When you turn on your A/C it puts a extra load on your engine, and makes the truck idle slower. The A/C idle control solenoid cycles on and off with the A/C compressor while the A/C is on to compensate for the varying loads, and makes the idle stable and smooth during cycles.
I've seen non A/C equipped models that had this solenoid attached to the carb from the factory. My 1981 F-150 among them. They served no purpose and were never plugged into anything. They were probably added to the carbs in bulk assymbly on the manufacturer assymbly line.
