Alternator or voltage regulator

1976 F350 2wd with a 390.

I tested the voltage at my battery and it's the same with the truck running or turned off. How can I tell if it is a bad alternator or just a bad voltage regulator?

Put your meter on your battery and jumper power from the Pos post of the battery to the field terminal of the alternator.
It should charge with all it’s got as this bypasses the regulator and key.

If it does charge make sure you are getting power on the "S" terminal of the regulator with the key on and that the regulator is well grounded. Also make sure you have 12V on the "A" terminal of the regulator.

Also if it did not charge make sure you have 12V on the BAT. terminal of the alternator.

Thanks for the info.

It was a bad alternator. I put on a new one along with a new regulator and all is well now.
