Anyone hacked their navigation so you can use all functions while rolling? I searched audio and come up with some vague solutions. Something about cutting a gray wire that goes to the speed sensor. I know their are functions that only the service dept can access. Its annoying since every other safety function can be turned off if you choose.
I've been looking for a bypass solution myself. Cutting the speed sensor wire has been suggested, but I've yet to hear someone confirm that it works. I'm not so sure that the speed sensor doesn't play a big part in the systems functionality.
Anyone successfully bypass an Expy or Gator Navigation system?
You may be right on that bridge. I will talk to my dealer guy see if he will get me in touch with a service tech versed in electronics from the dealership.
I have also been looking for a "fix" for the lack of control over the navigation while in motion. I think that I am just going to pull it out along with the rear TV/DVD and sell it on eBay (with all wiring harnesses). I will probably replace it with an aftermarket unit. If anyone is interested please send me a resonable offer via PM. I am in Naples, FL
I too am interested if there's a "work around" on disabling the "navigate only when stopped' feature. Not as much for my benefit as the driver, however, the passenger should be able to work the controls while I drive. I did read a post that saithat the speed sensor that regulates the Nav also activates the auto volume up/down as you drive. I kinda like that feature and would like to keep it.

I don't use that feature, it seems like I'm always messing with the volume when it's on. I'm curious what the absence of a signal from that wire will do to the NAV? I might get in there sometime this week and see what happens.
From the service manual: "PRINCIPLES OF OPERATION
Navigation System
The navigation system is integral to the audio unit. The audio unit controls the operation and interface between the user, the vehicle subsystems, and the external components. A map compact disc (CD) stored in the audio unit visually guides the user through the maneuvers required to arrive at the destination entered.
In order to calculate initial vehicle position, a global positioning system (GPS) antenna is used to track several available satellites simultaneously. The GPS antenna only receives data; it does not communicate with the satellites. A hardwired reverse input from the digital transmission range (TR) sensor and a hardwired vehicle speed input from the anti-lock brake system (ABS) module are also used to improve the accuracy of the navigation system."
Actually, because it get's the speed sens from the ABS module I should be able to pull the fuse on the ABS and see what happens with the NAV. Hmmmm, lets see what happens.
Wow I just started replying and had to shut down and come back and poof bridge is on it. I glad you are trying it my wife says I am obsessed with the gator and I do it on all new vehicles we get. I just want to get it just like I want it then I will be fine....somewhat haha. The wood dash kit should be in on Tuesday and having it installed on Friday. Sunday I am having it completly detailed inside and out. Exterior Clayed, Polished, Waxed, undercarriage and wheel wells steamed, leather dry steamed, carpets wet steamed. Hopefully next week sometime all the chips and scratches airbrushed. She is hoping she can drive atleast a couple of days next week. I told her you better drive it early in the week haha
OK, figured out how to bypass the NAV so that all the features can be used (by the passenger of course) while driving. Unfortunately, information is not free, so the solution will be for sale on ebay for $20...kidding. But someone will undoubtedly do this. I pulled the ABS fuse and sure enough all NAV features work while in motion. So, according to my wiring diagram there is a black/white wire going into the system from the ABS module that is the speed sens wire. I should be able to snip that wire and use the NAV at will.
When you "snip" the wire will this affect any nav features such as estimated time etc etc. I don't think it should since one of the nav setup screens is avg speed for each type of road. Let us know the outcome and how hard is it to get to the "wire". Maybe some type of connector is in order so you can connect it when you take it for work to the stealership.
UPDATE: Don't cut that wire just yet. Today I got in my car sans the ABS fuse for my morning commute and the NAV triangle did not move. The whole way to work my NAV thought I was sitting in my driveway. The compass letters did not change to red so I assume it was getting signal but, evidently it will not update the position w/o speed sensor input.
I'm going to run through the electrical diagrams and see if I can figure out why, but if it's internal to the NAV unit we're pretty much SOL. Perhaps a simple two-position switch to turn the speed sensor on/off?
I'll give it a try. Looking at the electrical diagram it looks pretty simple, no relays or anything like that. Best guess is that the NAV unit waits on speed sensor data before updating the position. I guess I'll have to see what kind of signal/data it is and measure the frequency/amplitude at stop and acceleration.
For those of you with the Gator NAV you can hold down the Menu and Audio buttons for 5 seconds and you should get a pin code screen. According to the -03-04 Service Manual the code is 917. That should open up some service options for you, however I don't think any address this issue.
