Leaking Slave Cylinder

Hello everyone,

I'm new here and I am having a problem with my slave cylinder and I'm wondering if anyone can shed some light on the issue.

I have a 2002 Ford Ranger FX4 with 100,000 Kms (60,000 miles) and the slave seems to be leaking because I have to refill the resevoir every 2-3 days or I can't get the truck in gear. I have the truck schedueled for maint. and I was wondering if I should use after market parts of OE. Also, I'm wondering if anyone can tell me if they know how it broke and if there is somthing I can do to prevent it form happening again. I'm thinking that it might be high pressure in the system when I start in the morning because I live in Northern Cananda and it can get to -40 Celcius (-20 F)

Any help and info would be greatly appreciated!!!

Cheers

FF06

That slave cylinder is pretty well known for leaking. I don't think it leaked because of anything you did or didn't do. Ford has a newer updated part number for the slave cylinder that is a better unit. I would use the Ford part because it's a pain to have to pull the trans out twice because the aftermarket part didn't work right.

When the outside temperature is -20 or more, you should push your clutch peddle in very slowly (just as slow as if you were driving it), start the engine with the trans in neutral and then let the clutch out very slow again. Let the engine run for a few minutes to warm things up. After the warm up, you can drive it normally again. There are seals (o-rings) inside your slave that are very susceptible to failure in cold weather. I have 170,000 miles on my 98 Ranger and still have the original clutch with no problems (yet). I have a new clutch kit and slave (not re-manufactured) all ready to put in, when the time comes. As far as getting your parts from the dealer, I have had good luck with aftermarket parts but I pay the extra and get the lifetime warranty. Good luck.

I think that the new slave I put in my 04 at 26K miles is leaking a little cuz I'm having a hard time shifting out of neutral and upshifting....need to check the fluid level. Clutch is making a little noise too....stupid hydraulic clutches...I like my cable operated clutch in my mustang much better.

Stop and think about it. When they (Ford) finally something right, they cant make any money on labor and parts so they come up with "a better idea". I agree completely, the cable operated clutch was the best. Also, I would like to know just why they had to put the slave unit inside the bell housing. I have seen external slaves before and on an F-150 at that. It only takes about 45 minutes to swap out a slave unit. That must be the reason they don't put them there anymore.
