The auto's are usually rated higher for towing. Most believe it's that way due to the number of people who cant properly drive a manual while pulling a load. The torque multiplication of the converter is a reason also. If your tranny is a C6 you shouldn't have any problems with it.
Behind a 351M it's probably a C6. With these trucks the thing you have to worry about is not whether you can move the load, but rather if you can stop the load.
I've seen an 81 F150 with a 300-6 and a 4 speed move a fully loaded hay trailer (fully loaded=14 round bales+1 on the flatbed, so were talking at least 20K) but the guy was just moving it around the farm, never got onto a real road with it because the brakes wouldn't stop the load over about 20mph. To actually pull the load to town he had a f350 dually with a 460 and a C6 because those trucks have better than twice the brakes of an F150. It could actually stop the load from the 45 mph he hauled it at.
well i would agree the one time i did haul a larg load and tried to stop at just over 30mph the rear lines broke so i had no breaks and had to call a buddy to help me fix the probleme and then follow me untill i got to were i was going incass they went again
