I use acetone in a mix with mineral spirits and marval mystery oil to purge my fuel system on a mercedes running on WVO. I also mix it with the WVO to thin it down. I have just read where some people are adding it to thier diesel fuel in mercedes to gain some mileage. Has anyone added it to thier trucks?
I did it for a while on all my vehicles with good results until I ran out of it and haven't been to the store to get any more. There was a noticable difference in the way the idle sounded (quieter and smoother). I don't drive it enough to be able to make a comparison on mileage.
My dad was able to gain 2-3 mpg with his Subaru.
One more thing, I assume you've read this guy. He has a lot of political things to say, but if you read past that you can glean some tricks out of his experience.
That was pretty interesting. The guy sounds technically competent, so I'll probably give it a try after I've got enough miles on the '07 to get a good baseline. He also sounds like a crackpot, so if anyone else in the forum has DIESEL-SPECIFIC results to share I'd love to see them.
If John Wayne were alive, he would probably tell you, "Hell yes, run acetone in your car. Who do those SOBs think they are?"
Acetone in Fuels (A Study of Dimethylketone or Propanone)
Author: Louis LaPointe

Just read the article, the man has a LOOOONG diatribe regarding GAS, just a couple of words about diesel. More words on how to run your own tests using his patented whiz-bang gauge gizmo. No hard scientific data unlike the guy that posted the mileage data here however. Definately a dearth of published study references.
Why not MEK, tolulene, benzine, laquer thinner (pick your favorite locally procured hydrocarbon solvent and insert here)? I dunno, unless I converted my truck to all teflon like I did to the fuel system in the airplane, I would be really afraid to run strange things. They injector fixit services be pricey, which amortizes poorly.
My $.02, your mileage will vary considerably
BTW ford, edison and the wright bros were considered crackpots in their time.
I think the reason for Acetone as the specific solvent is because (according to him) it can change the properties of the fuel such that the fuel burns more completely. I have no idea whether this is correct or if the other solvents would also have this effect, but it's very interesting and seems credible.
If Ford & company were considered crackpots in their time it wouldn't surprise me, but I'm not calling this guy out because he's got a different idea (I'm still considering trying this in my new PSD). I'm saying he sounds like a crackpot because the conspiracy theories & use of The Duke to promote his ideas put him way out there!
By the way, another reason I found this somewhat credible is because it seemed he had very little to gain by people using Acetone in their fuel. If he has an interest in the test equipment promoted in the article that would make me think twice...
The post on here a while back showed a mileage increase with the use of acetone at a very low concentration. BUT has anyone anywhere ever done a study on injector life using Acetone, How can something that dry be healthy for the injectors? poor a little diesel in your left hand and then poor some acetone on your right hand and see how dry your right hand feels.
I would be more inclined to poor 6oz of off the shelf wesson oil in the tank.
I've tried acetone, toulene (favorite), and zylene (second favorite) in my turbo gas engine to eek out a few more pounds of boost without knocking....all in small quantities. combined with water/methanol injection puts leaded race gas smile on your face for pump gas price.
I personally woundn't put it in a diesel engine simply because solvents have CRAP for lubricity and I can't afford new injectors or pumps. But by all means someone that can afford it test it and post it up. I'm interested.
How about running a few gallons of B-100 in the tank, (lets say 5 maybe?), with the rest diesel fuel, and then some toulene or acetone too? The Biodiesel is slippery as snot, and i think it will more than compensate for the small amount of acetone.
I've said this before in other threads about the same subject.
1.75 oz or about 1/6 cup to TEN GALLONS of diesel fuel. Using more than that works against you if you want to increase your mileage. The "solvent properties" of the acetone are so far removed from the fuel that it's insignificant.
I've used it with great success, not much mileage increase but the sound of the engine is quieter.
