I have a 1955 F-100 with the snugged up rear bumper. Where do I put the rear licence plate? I don't have the the original plate holder that attaches under the back light and when I called Mid Fifty they said that the rear bumper would hide the plate. So where do I put the rear licence plate? Here in Norway it has to be illuminated so I can't just stick it on the rear bumper.
I built a bracket for mine that puts the lighted frame centered on rear bumper. The bracket is attached to bumper bolts behind the bumper, goes beneath the bumper then up in front, and the plate frame " floats" in front of the bumper. Hope that makes sense. I can take a picture if you need me to. Joe
There are small LED license plate lights you could mount right on the plate holder, and even LED lighted license plate bolts to satisfy the authorities. LEDs are great, provide a lot of light in a very small package and virtually never burn out.
I mounted my license on the bumper. I centered it on the bumper and used a polished frame with a light that I got from the Summit Racing catalog. It works very well, lighting the plate nicely and looks really clean. The light is just tapped into the running light wire that already runs across the rear bed brace. Here is what my license plate mount looks like. It does not show the bracket, but it is not hard to make one. I can take a picture this weekend if need be. Joe
I have the same method as Joe and Randy. I centered my bumper and used a piece of angle iron 1"x1" in aluminum. I drilled one small hole on both ends and drill two holes on the underneath of my bumper. I mounted the bracket, tapped out two holes for the license plate and screwed it onto the bracket. I also have the billet license frame with a light as Randy mentioned.
Thanks Don, I am using Pros Pick nylon button latches. No igenuity, just a few $'s.
Airwick here is a picture of my bracket. What you see[taken from behind the driver side rear tire looking to the rear of truck] is a 1 1/2 " aluminum angle bolted to the bumper bracket bolts, 1" aluminum tubing bolted to the angle, two steel straps bolted to the tubing and license plate frame. This allowed the plate to display behind the bumper without drilling holes in the bumper. I used the materials because they were at hand and I had loaned my welder to a friend two hours away. Hope this helps with an idea as to how to do yours. I am sure that my plan came as a result of info posted by others on this site.
