Hey, I just picked up a '70 highboy from the dealer I work for. Has a snow plow and is in pretty fair shape for it's 36th birthday that just passed. However it has a clattering rocker arm sound coming from the right bank. That's how I got it cheap! I'm hoping to get the time to pop the cover off this week, but I have'nt been around many FE blocks. Hoping to get some advice before plugging up the garage with a new project. It seems to make the same noise from cold to warmed-up and through the rpm range. Any ideas?
From what you are describing I'd have to say push rod bushing. It'll clack clack clack warm or cold, idle fast or slow, when ya start out and when ya get back.
I had one of those in a 390 that I drove like that for a couple years, and boy did that thing run. It didn't matter where you mashed the gas it was still pulling.
I'd suggest just driving it for a while unless ya just gotta tear into it.
I'd still pull the valve cover and check. I'm leaning towards a bent pushrod myself, having experienced several of them on my FE with those same symptoms.
Sorry, but I could'nt wait. I clocked out early and pulled the valve cover on the right bank and...the lifter is cupping out. Darn, so much for the easy fix. I'm now trying to find a factory grind cam. If anybody has another idea as to a good lift/dur. number to keep things tame and drivable, I'd love to here it. Don't get me wrong, I love horses, I just hate to feed and nurse them all winter! Thank fellas.
