Hello, I have a 2003 F150 supercrew 4x4 and the cv axle boot on the drivers side, outer boot is leaking a small amout of grease. I know it should be changed but my question is, do I need any special tools to replace the boot or is there anything I should look out for while I have this apart. I have never had one of these things apart before and I just want to be prepared before I dig into it. Thanks in advance for all yuor help!
I believe that you must pull the axle to change the boot. They used to make a Speedy-Boot that didn't require axle removal, but I haven't seen any in a long time.
I know that the axle must come out, which is the easy part but, I was told that I may need special tool to install the clamps and that their may be some kind of retainer inside the boot at the knuckle. Any ideas on that? Your help is appriciated! Thanks!
small cut that leaks small greae may not be a problem. i migh tconsider rubbing black RTV over the small hol to seal it. Im with Joe, wait a couple years till it needs replaced, then do the entire axle, not just the boot.
Clear silicone will plug a small hole. I patched mine after a coyote hunt 5 years ago and it's still working. If you tear into it, replace the half shaft (axle) instead of just doing the boot. I've had zero success getting the aftermarket boots to stay in place and you have to replace both inner and outer boots when you do it since it's usually the outer boot that leaks.
Thanks guys, I think I will try to patch it, a reman axle at the local jobber is 185.00 ans from what I hear from others is that aftermarket boots don't fit that well, so I think I will replace the axle when it goes bad. Thanks again for all your help!
